TO THE BIBLE: Genesis 3:11 TLB
‘“Who told you you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten fruit from the tree I warned you about?”’
LET’S TALK
Growing up, all Sylvester ever heard from his parents were negative words. They always called him a good-for-nothing bumbler who would never amount to much. So it wasn’t a surprise that as a teenager, he showed no ambition or drive for anything. He had developed a negative perception of himself, and was never willing to work hard, because he thought, “Why bother? I’ll never get it right anyway.”
You see, the negative information Sylvester had been fed over time controlled his thoughts and actions. That’s why it matters a great deal who and what you listen to. Your life is the expression of all you’ve built into it over time through the words and thoughts you received from those you’ve been listening to. You can’t be different from the information you’ve stored in your mind.
Now, you know information doesn’t only come from the people around you; you’ve also got to be careful of the programmes and movies you watch, the kind of music you listen to, and the books and magazines you read. This is so important, because it’s only a matter of time before what you’ve become as a result of the information you’ve accumulated will show up in your character and your life as a whole.
Take Paul’s advice seriously: “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith” (Hebrews 13:7). Choose to listen only to godly men and women who have the lifestyle of faith.
