TO THE BIBLE: 1 John 1:3
“That which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.”
LET’S TALK
Have you ever heard someone say that when you do something wrong, you “break fellowship” with God? Such people claim that though your relationship to Him isn’t affected, until you’ve “settled the score” with God, you’re not in fellowship with Him. People who believe this have this idea because of their own human experiences with their parents, family members, friends etc. They imagine God as one who gives them the “silent treatment,” when there’s an “issue.” They feel their fellowship with Him is broken until the matter is settled. But that’s not true!
You never achieved fellowship with God because of your righteousness; it came because He gave you His righteousness. How then could your righteousness sustain it? The truth is, your fellowship with God isn’t and can never be affected by anything that you do or don’t do. He already knew that you couldn’t make it on your own, which is the reason He also made allowance for your errors by making it possible for you to receive forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
Never think of God as a Father who holds on to issues with any of His kids; His love is higher and deeper than that. Like Paul, come to the point where you’re persuaded that “…neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
