4 important virtues as a Christian By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome
4 important virtues
There are four virtues that human beings endowed with and you can live your life strengthening these virtues in the light of the gospel.
1. Prudence
Prudence is practical wisdom, with this you make wise choices, wise decisions. it’s a virtue. Do you make wise choices? have you looked into your life? do you make wise decisions? not wise in the eyes of the world but wise in the eyes of God.
Strengthen the virtue of Prudence, become Prudent in your life, be a wise man be a wise woman with the wisdom of God not the wisdom of the world. if God endows you with Prudence, others will take notice of you that you have such a feature. you make the right choices, you make the right decisions, you make less mistakes.
success can be defined another way, the ability to minimise your errors. Prudence will help you with that.
2. Courage
Everybody doesn’t seem to manifest it but anyone in Christ ought to have it. it is the ability and the will to do what is right or necessary even when you’re faced with adversity. it is the will and ability to stand up for what is right in spite of opposition as a Christian you have to have it in increasing measure. God said to Joshua be strong and courageous.
Have courage be willing to do the right thing, be willing to do what is necessary, what is right and necessary in spite of opposition.
The contrary winds drive your roots deeper. what is needed today in the ministry of the gospel is Men of courage, women of courage.
Courage to stand up for what is right, not what is right in the eyes of men, but doing the right thing under God. what does the Spirit of God say what does the word of God say. It is affirming your faith in Christ no matter who your adversaries are. That’s what brought us here, that’s what got the church of Jesus Christ to where it is today, that’s what got the gospel around the world. That’s what they are the apostles did, that’s what Jesus did, that’s what the prophets of old did, they stood for what was right in spite of opposition. They weren’t afraid of the King and they were not afraid to die.
The terrorists we talk about that are terrorizing the civilized world are men who have sworn themselves to martyrdom. They know what it is to have the sentence of death upon their lives. That kind of courage for the positive, that kind of courage to give Life, to strengthen others, to bring life to others, to lift others is what the prophets of old had, that’s what moses, Samuel, and Elijah had, that’s what Jesus had and that’s what the apostles had.
They staked their lives on their claims, that’s the spirit that makes you do anything for the gospel of Jesus Christ that’s the only reason that you can’t keep anything for the Gospel of Christ because you call yourself nothing yet with all things, they call you poor but you’re making many rich.
The courage to be what God called you to do, courage stand, to face a fight and courage to make you fight sometimes you have to make a fight.
3. Temperance or self-control
It is the ability and the will to control your impulses to delay immediate gratification for a long-term gain.
The ability to wait, to hold on, to control your impulses the ability to say not now.
There is a time to stay without eating, there is a time to stay awake. find out from the people in the hospital if they are fasting lots of them are fasting because they can’t eat anyway that’s what fasting is, you will feel like eating but you’re not going to eat. you feel sleepy but you’re not going to sleep. you tell your body not now.
if your body cannot be subject to you, you are still a slave that’s what being in the army of Christ is all about, training your body, you will have to train your body discipline your body break it like you break a horse, until it does what you say not you doing what it tells you to do.
Many are still being run by their bodies, they are either too fat or too slim. fighting your weight continually. if you’re going to do anything serious for God you’re going to learn to stay awake when you should be sleeping, you are going to learn to stay without food when you should be eating. There are things you are going to have to do to your physical body. You will subdue your body.
You say well whenever God wants to do something for me he will, No he wouldn’t. God didnt stop samuel from going to Eli when he was calling, but eli thought samuel how to respond to God and that was when God spoke to him.
If you knew the things you have missed in your life with sleep you will be amazed what sleep has cost you, what food has cost you.
4. Justice
It is the fair honest application of prudence courage and temperance to all human relationships. Brings them all together. When you become a christian it’s just the beginning of a lifetime of spiritual character building in christ.
